Employers’ Responsibility for a Successful Internship

The following information serves as a guide to assist you in establishing a successful internship. Please feel free to contact us regarding ideas, concerns, questions or other input you may have.

Role of the Student

An internship is an opportunity for students to synthesize classroom theory, personal skills and genuine career-related work experience. Students will submit a résumé  and a personal statement describing their academic and career goals, as well as any other information potential employers may require of them. At the end of the internship, each student will be required to submit a written report to his or her respective school.

Role of the Employer

Your primary responsibility as the employers is to ensure that the internship offered is meaningful and serves to enhance the intern’s educational experience and career development. You should provide:

  • a clear description of the intern’s duties
  • establish learning objectives and development skills in relation to the pre-professional experience,
  • and then structure and supervise the internship to meet these objectives.
  • At the end of the internship, the reporting supervisor of the intern in the company will be asked to provide feedback to the school on the intern’s performance.
