SMU Internship Programme
Internships are a key component of the SMU curriculum and a graduation requirement for most postgraduate programmes. They provide students with real-world work experience and a deeper cross-cultural understanding of business practices, while also offering employers access to highly motivated, career-oriented individuals.
What's in it for Employers?
SMU students are highly regarded for their 'out-of-the-box' thinking, and they add value by offering fresh perspectives on various systems, processes, and programmes. Having an intern can potentially free up professional staff to focus on other important projects and tasks. Each year, many host organizations choose to participate in the internship programme again due to the positive experiences and contributions they receive from interns. The SMU Internship Programme is a proven, cost-effective way to recruit and evaluate potential employees.
Managing the Internship
A successful internship involves a clear description of duties, responsibilities, project scope, and expected outcomes, all laid down in advance to provide a structured learning experience for the intern. Interns should be viewed as entry-level professionals receiving on-the-job training, and they will add value to the organization. Towards the end of the internship, supervisors should complete a Performance Appraisal form for the interns.
